Arrived: Visa-free entry

Arriving is usually not a big issue, and I am always asked to show my luggage because of Narcos references. I set up my bank account, set myself as a small business, and pay 1% taxes. You can get an address from people outside of the gov office for a $, then it takes a few visits to the tax office to get yourself set up, and on you go. Do not miss your monthly taxes before the 15th and keep it under a certain quantity (120k I think or something) and below 4k in 6 months to avoid extra VAT declaration. Technically, you should stay over 6 mo every year, but it is not an issue AFAIK, and an accountant confirmed this. I did not feel any recrimination or issues; they seemed to be more busy with RS for that, but I heard bad experiences from Indian migrants. Teenagers can sometimes be aggressive; use common sense. Tbilisi and Batumi are great cities to live in, and there is a large expat set of communities. English is pretty common in the large cities, and nightlife is quite great. Don't expect to pay under 1.2k a mo for rent on nice areas like Vake or Saburtalo for an apartment, and if you just want a 6-month contract, it is quite harder to find; get there with a month’s Airbnb and take your time before committing. Making local friends is not hard.

Software developer on TN Visa

Arrived: Work visa

The first year was not easy. From a friend’s suggestion back in 2013, I applied with a partial undergraduate (incompleted university) from a 3-year study. They took many looks, and I had to point out that the NAFTA agreement allows this, and they called my company , etc., but they accepted it for 1 year. Next year, they took time to accept it and said they can deny it next time. However, I had already started my CEVENAL certification to get my Cedula profesional. In 2015, they said it was the last time they allowed me to not have a Cedula. By 2016, I had a Cedula and got the TN Visa for another 3 years and have been renewing it until now. However, I have now moved out of the US and kept on working under the visa. I could not get a residency as that would cancel my work visa. BUT I heard stories that you can start that 3 months after you come in, but do it if your TN is good for 3 years as the process can take up to 2, and you can't leave while this process is ongoing because they WILL cancel your visa upon re-entry because the TN visa is not for dual intent. ANOTHER road is to jump into a PERM visa, but I haven't seen anyone succeed at this. A PERM visa does allow you to apply for a green card. Either way, the US is expensive, and taxes even in a state without state tax get close to 25% without dependents. However, I am now just waiting on my last year to get my social security points to access retirement Social Security, and I will just bail out from the TN Visa and paying these taxes. I will come back for my retirement fund. I never got a US green card or citizenship.
